Aitor Merino is a Spanish director, writer, and producer, born in Madrid in 1982. He has directed several feature films, television series, and short films, and has written and produced for numerous projects.
Merino began his career in the film industry in 2003, working as an assistant director on a number of projects. His first film as director, The Empty House, was released in 2006, and it was his first official recognition, winning the Best Short Film Award at the Madrid International Film Festival. From there, he went on to direct a number of short films and documentaries, and in 2010 he was invited to direct his first feature film, The District.
The District was a critical and commercial success, and Merino received numerous awards for his work, including the Goya Award for Best New Director. He followed this up with the feature film The Fourth Floor in 2012, which was also met with critical acclaim. Merino’s most recent feature film, The End of the World, was released in 2015, and has been nominated for numerous awards, including a Goya Award for Best Director.
Merino has also worked extensively in television, directing episodes of the series La Vida Secreta de Todos (2013) and La Joya de la Corona (2015). In addition, he has written and produced for a number of projects, such as the feature film Heat (2012) and the television series La Fuga (2013).
