Barbara Matejčić is a Croatian film director who has been making films since the late 1990s. She is best known for her feature films, which often focus on female protagonists. Her films have won awards at several international film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival.
Matejčić was born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1966. She began her career in the mid-1990s, writing and directing several short films. She made her feature film debut in 1998 with the drama “Cirkus Columbia”. The film was a critical success, winning awards at both the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival.
Matejčić’s follow-up feature film, “The High Sun”, was released in 2015. The film follows three love stories over three different time periods, from the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s to the present day. It won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
In 2017, Matejčić released her third feature film, “Quit Staring at My Plate”. The film follows a young woman’s struggle to maintain her independence in the face of her family’s oppressive expectations. Matejčić continues to make films and has also directed several television series. In 2019, she released her fourth feature film, “The Diary of Diana B.” The film follows the story of a young woman who discovers her grandmother’s diary and learns about her family’s past.
