Spanish-Portuguese filmmaker, born in Barcelona and trained in London, has been active in the film industry since 1995. He has both produced and directed several short and feature-length documentary films, earning numerous awards as a director and producer. In 1996, he produced the drama "Rooftop," which won the Best Screenplay award at the Valencia International Film Festival and was distributed by Odeon Cinemas in London. In 1999, he directed the avant-garde experimental film "To Anyone Who Can Hear Me," participating in film festivals in Taormina, Edinburgh, Madrid, Siena, Croatia, and Figueira da Foz. It won the Grand Prize for Fiction Feature Film and the International Journalists' Jury Prize, and received an Honorable Mention at the International Film and Video Festival of Famalicão.
In 2001, Carlos produced "Shadows," a film selected for the Rotterdam International Film Festival in January 2002 and premiered at the Columbia Tri-Star Preview Theatre in London in 2001. He completed his second feature-length documentary "Retrato" in 2004, which was shown in international documentary festivals in Taiwan, Ankara, Rome, Madrid, Cadiz, Helsinki, DocLisboa, and Tui-PlayDoc. "Retrato" won the City of Madrid Award for Best Spanish Feature-Length Documentary at the Madrid International Documentary Film Festival and received a Jury Honorable Mention at the Tui International Documentary Film Festival. From 2009 to 2010, "Retrato" was distributed internationally by the Miguel Cervantes Institute, with screenings in cities including Moscow, Mexico City, Shanghai, Stockholm, Beijing, Rome, and Casablanca. In 2013, it was selected for international screening by Eurochannel across Europe, Asia, and America.
In 2009, Carlos directed and produced the fiction drama "Roots," which won the Prix Bracara Augusta at the Braga Independent Film Festival in Portugal and Best Short Film at the Minho International Film Festival. In 2011, he directed the short film "Strike," which was broadcast on RTP2 in 2013 and 2014 and shown at the Galician Cinematheque, Murcia, and Valencia. In 2016, he completed a series of 13 documentaries for the Portuguese channel RTP2. His observational documentary "Cru," produced in Porto over nearly 10 years and supported by ICA in 2016, premiered at the International Competition of Dok Leipzig in November 2017.
In 2018, he directed and produced "Alentejo, Late Afternoon," an environmental documentary short film that pays tribute to the light, colors, and textures of the landscapes of Alentejo, Portugal. This film was screened at various international film festivals, including the International Film Festival - To Save and Preserve and the International Nature Film Festival in Gödöllő. In 2021, he completed "Dividual," a social documentary filmed over several years in Portugal, selected at various film festivals, including Boden, Stockholm, Luleå, and Lerapetra.
Recently, he concluded his second feature fiction film, "The Warning Sky," which is slated for an upcoming premiere. Currently, he is working on a new documentary feature film project titled "Magma," supported by ICA and in production.
