Jed Rothstein is an American award-winning producer, director, and writer. He has directed and produced a variety of documentaries, including The China Hustle, Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press, and New York Times Op-Docs. His work has been seen on Netflix, HBO, Showtime, Amazon, Hulu, and various other outlets.
Rothstein was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in a Jewish household and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a degree in English. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in filmmaking.
Rothstein’s career began with writing and producing short films and commercials. He began directing documentaries in the late 1990s, and his first feature-length documentary, The China Hustle, was released in 2018. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
In 2016, Rothstein directed Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press, which was a Netflix original documentary that explored the legal battle between wrestler Hulk Hogan and the media site Gawker. The film was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special in 2018.
In addition to his feature-length documentaries, Rothstein has also directed numerous New York Times Op-Docs, which are short documentaries exploring various topics. These include “The Undocumented Lawyer,” “The New American Dream,” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”
Rothstein’s work has earned him a variety of awards and accolades, including the 2018 Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary and the 2017 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award. He is also a two-time honoree of the International Documentary Association’s Courage Under Fire award.
