John Bolton is an American political figure and former diplomat who has held a variety of high-level positions in the federal government. He is best known for serving as the 25th National Security Advisor in President Trump's administration from April 2018 to September 2019.

Bolton was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1948. As a student, he excelled in his studies, graduating from Yale University in 1970 with a B.A. in political science. He then went on to pursue a law degree from Yale Law School, graduating in 1974. After graduation, he served as a law clerk to Judge Malcolm Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

In 1981, Bolton entered the government as an Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Department of Justice. He then served as Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs and Assistant Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs in the Reagan administration. In 1989, he became Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs during the George H. W. Bush administration, a position he held until 1993.

Bolton then left government service to become a senior vice president at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a conservative think tank. He was also a regular commentator on Fox News, CNN, and other news outlets. In 2005, he was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, a position he held until 2006.

In 2017, Bolton joined the Trump administration as a foreign policy advisor. The following year, he was appointed National Security Advisor, a post he held until 2019. During his tenure, Bolton was a major proponent of Trump's hardline foreign policy, advocating for tough sanctions on countries like North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela.

Since leaving the Trump administration, Bolton has been a vocal critic of the president's foreign policy. He has also authored a book, The Room Where It Happened, which chronicles his time in the White House.
