Juan Ignacio Fernández, born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina in 1962, is an award-winning Argentine film director, screenwriter and film producer. He is best known for his critically acclaimed films “La Historia Oficial” (The Official Story) (1985) and “Marea Roja” (Red Tide) (1989).

Juan Ignacio Fernández began his film career at the age of 18 when he joined the Cinematographic Training Center in his hometown. He then continued his studies at the National School of Cinematography in Buenos Aires. During this period, he worked as a scriptwriter and assistant director on several films.

In 1985, Juan Ignacio Fernández wrote and directed his first feature film, “La Historia Oficial”. The film was an immediate success, winning critical acclaim and several awards, including the Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prix and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His next film, “Marea Roja” (Red Tide), was released in 1989 and was even more successful than his previous film, earning him the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival.

Juan Ignacio Fernández has since directed several other films, including “El Fondo del Mar” (The Bottom of the Sea) (1992), “La Furia de los Dioses” (The Fury of the Gods) (1996) and “La Hija de Mi Jefe” (My Boss’s Daughter) (2008). His most recent work is the 2017 film “Un Lugar en el Mundo” (A Place in the World), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Juan Ignacio Fernández has also worked as a producer and writer, collaborating with other directors on projects such as “Cinco Minutos de Gloria” (Five Minutes of Glory) (2000) and “El Secreto de Sus Ojos” (The Secret in Their Eyes) (2009).

Throughout his career, Juan Ignacio Fernández has been recognized for his creative vision and his unique style of storytelling.
