Lina Caicedo is an independent film director from Colombia. She is best known for her critically acclaimed feature film Fish Soup, which won numerous awards including the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival in 2019.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1989, Caicedo was raised in a culturally rich environment with her family. Her father is a painter and her mother is a doctor. From a young age, Caicedo was inspired by the art and culture of her homeland. She began making short films with her friends in high school, and eventually went on to study film at the National University of Colombia.
After graduating, Caicedo moved to New York City to further pursue her dreams of becoming a filmmaker. She interned with award-winning director, Alfonso Cuarón, and worked as a production assistant on several films. In 2014, she was accepted into the prestigious Columbia University School of the Arts where she earned an MFA in film directing.
In 2018, Caicedo released her debut feature film, Fish Soup. The film follows the story of a Colombian family and their struggles to stay together in a small fishing village in the Caribbean. Fish Soup was praised for its powerful storytelling and captivating visuals. It earned the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for multiple awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Caicedo has since become a respected director in the film industry, with her work appearing in festivals around the world. She is currently working on her next feature film, which is set to be released in 2021.
