Jan Tenhaven is a German film director, producer and screenwriter who has made a name for himself in the film industry. He is best known for his work on the critically acclaimed films, Good Bye Lenin! (2003) and The Lives of Others (2006).

Tenhaven was born in Berlin, Germany in 1975. He studied film and media at the University of Arts in Berlin, and was passionate about film from a young age. After graduating, he worked as an assistant director for various independent films, where he honed his skills as a director.

In 2003, Tenhaven made his feature film debut with Good Bye Lenin!, a comedy-drama set in East Germany in 1989. The film was a critical success, earning Tenhaven various awards, including the Berlinale Camera Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Tenhaven followed this success with the 2006 drama The Lives of Others. The film was widely acclaimed, and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also earned Tenhaven a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.

In 2008, Tenhaven produced the critically acclaimed drama The Baader Meinhof Complex. The film was nominated for several awards, and won the Silver Bear Award for Best Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival.

In 2010, Tenhaven released his first English-language film, Mute, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Justin Theroux. The film received mixed reviews, but was still praised for its visuals and cinematography.

In 2013, Tenhaven wrote and directed the psychological drama Phoenix, starring Nina Hoss and Ronald Zehrfeld. The film was a critical success, winning several awards, including the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Tenhaven has since directed several more critically acclaimed films, such as The People vs. Fritz Bauer (2015), Western (2017), and Never Look Away (2018). He is also an executive producer on the Netflix series Dark (2017).
