Moira Demos is an American filmmaker and producer best known for her work in documentary film. She has worked on a variety of topics, from the struggles of young adults with mental health issues to the civil rights movement. Demos has won numerous awards for her work, including an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
Demos grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts, and began her filmmaking career as an associate producer on the documentary film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (1998). She then went on to produce a number of other documentaries, including The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), The Fog of War (2003), and Street Fight (2005). In 2006, she co-directed and produced the documentary Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa, which focused on a community of people living in the New Mexico desert.
In 2015, Demos and her longtime collaborator, Laura Ricciardi, released the documentary series Making a Murderer. The series, which was released on Netflix, follows the case of Steven Avery, who was wrongfully convicted of a crime and later exonerated. The series was a massive success and garnered critical acclaim. It won six Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and a Writers Guild Award.
In addition to her work in documentary film, Demos has also served as a juror for numerous film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival. She also serves on the board of directors for the International Documentary Association.
Demos is currently based in New York City and is working on a number of documentary projects. She is also a frequent speaker at film festivals and other events. Her work continues to be highly acclaimed and she continues to be a leader in the documentary film community.
