BIO

Petra Seliškar is a Slovenian film director, screenwriter, and producer. She was born in 1962 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She studied at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana, graduating in 1988 with a degree in film and TV directing.

Seliškar is best known for her feature films, which have won numerous awards at international film festivals. Her debut feature, A Return (Vrnitev, 1999), won the Grand Prix for Best Feature Film at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Other awards include a Special Jury Award at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam for her second feature, The Great Migration (Velika selidba, 2002).

Seliškar has also directed numerous shorts, documentaries, and television projects. Her documentary films have earned her numerous awards, including an award for Best Documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam for her film, The Art of Living (Umetnost zivljenja, 2004). Her television work includes the series, I, Life (Jaz, zivljenje, 2012).

Seliškar has also directed several stage plays, including productions at the Slovenian National Theatre in Ljubljana and the Prešeren Theatre in Kranj. Her work has been shown at festivals and theatres throughout Europe and the United States.

Seliškar is passionate about creating art that explores the complexities of human relationships and social issues. Her films often deal with themes of identity, family, and the struggle for personal freedom. She is an advocate for women’s rights and has served on the jury of the Women in Film Festival.

Seliškar has received numerous honorary awards for her work, including the Prešeren Fund Award for her contribution to Slovenian culture and the Herder Prize for her contribution to world culture. She also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor.
