Ruari Muir is a Scottish film director, producer, and screenwriter whose career spans over two decades. He is best known for his work on the hit television series Outlander, as well as his feature films, including the critically-acclaimed drama, The Last King of Scotland.
Muir was born in 1974 in Edinburgh, Scotland and grew up in the small town of Melrose. From a young age, he was drawn to art and storytelling, and would often make short films with his friends. After graduating from high school, Muir attended the Edinburgh College of Art, where he studied Film and Television.
After graduating from college, Muir began his career working on independent films and television projects in Scotland. His first feature-length film was the romantic comedy, The Lighthouse (1998), which he wrote and directed. The film was well-received and won several awards at film festivals.
In 2004, Muir made his break into Hollywood with his adaptation of the best-selling novel, The Last King of Scotland. The film, which starred Forest Whitaker and James McAvoy, was a critical and commercial success, winning an Oscar for Best Actor.
In 2008, Muir wrote and directed his first television series, Outlander. The show was a hit with viewers, earning six Emmy nominations and becoming one of the most-watched shows on cable television.
Since then, Muir has gone on to direct several other television shows, including the crime drama Criminal Minds, and the supernatural series, Sleepy Hollow. He has also directed several feature films, including the horror-thriller, The Uninvited (2009) and the romantic drama, The Best of Me (2014).
Muir is currently in pre-production on his next feature film, a biopic about the life of legendary Scottish actor Sean Connery. He is also developing a new television series for HBO.
