Sam Hopkins is an independent film director, writer, and editor from the United States. He is best known for his work in the feature films, "The House of Sand and Fog" (2003) and "The Thin Red Line" (1998).
Sam was born in Los Angeles, California in 1971. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied film and video production, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1994. After graduation, Sam immediately began working in the film industry, working as a production assistant, assistant director, and editor on various feature films, commercials, and television shows.
In 1998, Sam wrote, directed, and edited his debut feature film, "The Thin Red Line", which was a critical success and earned him several awards, including a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director. Following the success of "The Thin Red Line", Sam co-wrote and directed the 2003 feature film "The House of Sand and Fog", which was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Director. His other credits include the television movie "Undaunted Courage" (2004), the short film "The Great Wall" (2005), and the feature film "The Winter People" (2009).
Throughout his career, Sam has worked with various notable actors and directors, including Sean Penn, Ben Kingsley, Terrence Malick, and Robert Redford. He has also been a guest lecturer and panelist at a number of film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the San Francisco International Film Festival.
