BIO

Stefan Schwietert is a Swiss-born filmmaker and director of feature films and documentaries. He has earned numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious German Film Award and the European Film Award.

Born in Bern, Switzerland in 1969, Schwietert studied film and television directing at the University of Television and Film in Munich. After graduation, he began working in documentary filmmaking. He directed a number of short and long-form documentaries, including ‘Sommervögel’ and ‘Homo Faber’, both of which received awards at the Munich International Festival of Documentary Films.

In 2010, he made his feature-length directorial debut with the film ‘Leben unter Wasser’ (Life Under Water). The film won the German Film Award for Best Documentary, as well as the European Film Award for Best Documentary and the Bavarian Film Award for Best Documentary.

In 2013, Schwietert directed ‘Der Klang des Herzens’ (The Sound of the Heart), a feature film about a young man who is struggling to find his place in a rapidly changing world. The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and earned Schwietert the Bavarian Film Award for Best Direction.

In 2015, Schwietert directed ‘Die Vermessung der Welt’ (The Measurement of the World), a biopic about the 18th century German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the German Film Award for Best Direction.

In 2017, Schwietert directed ‘Die Gärtnerin von Versailles’ (The Gardener of Versailles), a drama about a young woman who is tasked with restoring the gardens of Versailles. The film won the German Film Award for Best Direction and was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Picture.
