Susan Gluth is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. She is best known for her work on the critically acclaimed films Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Juno (2007), and The Fault in Our Stars (2014).
Gluth was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in a creative and diverse family. Her father was a jazz musician and her mother was an artist. Gluth started out her career as a production assistant in 1988, working on the set of the film, The Accidental Tourist. From there, she worked on a variety of projects, such as TV commercials, industrial films, and music videos for artists such as Paula Abdul and Kenny Loggins.
In 1996, Gluth made her feature film debut with the independent film, Powwow Highway. The film was well-received and opened the door for her to direct other projects. In 2001, she directed the romantic comedy, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, starring Uma Thurman and Ben Chaplin.
Gluth rose to fame in 2006 with the release of Little Miss Sunshine. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Gluth an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Following her success with Little Miss Sunshine, Gluth wrote and directed the indie film, Juno. The film was an even bigger success, winning Gluth an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
In 2014, Gluth released her third feature film, The Fault in Our Stars. The film was a huge success, grossing over $300 million worldwide and earning Gluth a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.
Gluth has also been involved in a number of philanthropic projects. She is a board member of the non-profit organization, FilmAid International, which seeks to use the power of media to improve the lives of vulnerable populations. In addition, she is a supporter of the ACLU and the Women’s Media Center.
