Violeta Blasco is a Spanish film director, documentarian, and producer whose career has spanned more than 25 years. Blasco was born in Valencia, Spain in 1968. She began her career in the theater, working as an actress and director in the early 1990s. She subsequently moved into the world of documentary filmmaking, producing several well-received works. Blasco transitioned to feature films in the late 1990s, directing her first feature film in 2000, the award-winning drama The Son. The film was a critical success and garnered numerous awards, including the Goya Award for Best New Director.
Blasco has remained active in the Spanish film industry since then, directing a number of feature films. Her 2004 drama The House was a critical favorite, and was nominated for multiple awards. Other notable films include the 2006 drama The Other Side of the Bed, which was nominated for the Goya Award for Best Film; the 2007 comedy-drama The Good Life, which won the Goya for Best Film; and the 2009 romantic drama Lullaby for a Dog, which won the Goya for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Blasco has also directed several documentaries, including the 2007 documentary The Art of Understanding, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Her other documentary credits include the 2012 film La Sombra de una Duda, which won the Goya Award for Best Documentary, and the 2017 documentary The Secret Life of the Sea, which was nominated for the Goya Award for Best Documentary.
Aside from her work in film, Blasco has also been active in the world of television. She directed the 2013 miniseries El Tiempo Entre Costuras, and has since directed numerous television movies and series.
Blasco has won numerous awards throughout her career, including five Goya Awards, four Fotogramas de Plata Awards, and one Spanish Academy of Cinematic Arts and Sciences Award. She is widely considered to be one of the leading figures of Spanish cinema.
